If you use the above search box or any of our links below to order your Zen books, or any other books, the Zen Center receives a small portion of the sale. Summer, 2010 Every summer we have a group book study at ZCOC. The purpose is to read and discuss a book together, after our regular sitting schedule, with emphasis upon its relationship to our own lives and practice. While it is helpful to attend all of the sessions, to read the chapters in advance, and to be prepared to contribute to discussion, it is not required to participate. This summer the book we have selected is: How To Raise an Ox: Zen Practice as Taught in Zen Master Dogen's Shobogenzo by Francis Dojun Cook. The book study will begin on Tuesday, July 6, 2010. This year the study will take place on six consecutive Tuesday evenings. Schedule: July 6 Chap. 1 “Introduction” & Chap. 2 “Importance of Faith” (p.1—32) July 13 Chap. 3 “Arousing the Thought of Enlightenment” (p. 33—48) July 20 Chap. 4 “The Problem of Karma” (p. 49—62) July 27 Chap. 6 “Giving Life to Our Lives” (p. 73—84) Aug. 3 “The Sounds of Valley Streams, the Forms of the Mountain” & “Arousing the Supreme Thought" (p. 101—125) Aug. 10 “Continuous Practice” & “Everyday Life” (p. 175—210)
Book Study in Recent Years:
Previous Book StudiesThe 2005 Summer Book Study was on Refining Your Life: From Zen Kitchen to Enlightenment by Dogen and Uchiyama. Some reflections from participants: "If you had asked me a few days ago if my life was showing any signs of refinement, I might have answered yes. Today as I write, I am feeling at loose ends. It is amazing to become so aware of oneself through the awakening process and to allow those areas of my life which have been smothered over the years to begin to quietly and effectively surface to be released for good." -- Margaret M. "In the past six months I can see how I was chasing my own form of toys through my cultivation of an art career and my desire to obtain acceptance from my art instructors and prospective commercial galleries. I have come to realize that I can still enjoy the process of art making, but that art making does not need to provide the means for financial stability." -- John M. Books we have studied in the past are listed below. ZCOC also has recommended reading at this page.
